Course Description

This course is an introduction precision and accuracy in structural engineering calculations. You will be introduced to the progression of engineering calculations and the difference between accuracy and precision. Structural engineering design methodology and the effect of this methodology on justifiable precision will be discussed. The applicability of these discussions will be demonstrated through practical examples. This course will give structural and civil engineers an appreciation for the meaning of their design calculations.

Learning Objectives

• Learn the history of the progression of engineering calculation methods.
• Learn the difference between precision and accuracy and how this is applied to practical engineering calculations.
• Learn how engineering calculations are affected by the precision and accuracy of design assumptions.
• Learn how to apply reasonable precision in engineering calculations.
