Course Description

This course is an introduction to seismic design of composite steel deck and concrete-filled diaphragms. Through reading NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 5, you will be introduced to the roles of diaphragms, diaphragm components, diaphragm behavior and design principles, building analysis and diaphragm forces, diaphragm analysis and internal component forces, component design, and detailing and constructability issues. This course will give structural and civil engineers a deeper understanding of the design of these diaphragms.

Learning Objectives

• Learn the role of diaphragms and diaphragm components.
• Learn composite steel deck diaphragm analysis, behavior and design principles.
• Learn how to calculate diaphragm forces and the forces in internal components.
• Learn detailing and construability issues for composite steel deck diaphragms.
