Water Pump Design

Author:
Pete Peterson, P.E.
Course #2023013
PDH: 2 hrs
Price: $30.00

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Most water systems include pumps to move water through the treatment plant and through the distribution system. These pumps represent a significant capital cost, but an even more significant operational cost. Poor selection of a pump can result in a variety of problems, ranging from less efficient operation to complete system failure. This course will cover the information required to start the pump selection process and continue through review of pump types, analysis of pump and system curves, and finally selection of appropriate pumps. It will also cover the number of pumps that may be required, whether the pumps should all be the same size, and how to analyze multiple pumps that operate simultaneously. The course will cover the concepts of shut off head, pump runout and net positive suction head. The course will also cover how variable frequency drives impact the operation of the pump.

COURSE OUTLINE:

• Pump locations
• Types of pumps – end-suction, horizontal and vertical
• Pump curves from manufacturers
• Developing system curves for a single pipe
• Developing system curves for a distribution system
• Pump selection using system curve and pump curve
• Combining multiple pump curves
• Impact of variable frequency drives
• Other pump controls

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this course, the user will:

• Understand the different types of pumps that are available to move clean water
• Understand what parameters are included in a pump curve.
• Understand how to develop a system curve
• Understand how to use the pump curve and the system curve to select an appropriate pump
• Understand how a variable frequency drive can be used to modify a pump curve.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

This course is intended as a general guide to design of clean water pumps therefore the intended audience includes engineers responsible for design of water distribution systems, engineers responsible for operation of treatment plants or distribution systems and engineers responsible for retrofits of existing booster pump stations. It also includes those engineers and managers responsible for reviewing water pump design or operation.

COURSE SUMMARY:

This course provides an overview of the design of pumps used for clean water applications, including well pumps, high service pumps and booster pumps. It describes the different types of pumps used and discusses the appropriate piping configurations. It also discusses the information available on a typical pump curve and how these curves are used in conjunction with system curves to determine the operating point for a pump. It also discusses the use of variable frequency drives with pump motors.
